Gadgets & Technology

Chat about gadgets and random tech stuff in here.

I’m not in the market for something like this but this looks rad.

oooh this does look cool :eyes:

I got tired of using my iPhone out in the dark on walks to make sure Viggo isn’t eating poop, so I looked up wirecutter’s top pick and bought two for me and Andie

These flashlights came with a rechargeable battery that is the size of two AA batteries, kinda cool!

After I started using cloudflared to proxy this Discourse to the outside world, I’ve decided to start consolidating all of my internet networking and storage stuff to Cloudflare.

Up til now I was hooked on using S3/CloudFront to host my static sites, but every domain set up in AWS Route53 costs me $0.75 a month I think, so that’s at least $3.70-ish I can save every month by switching to Cloudflare. I pay less than $2 a month in S3 costs, but that could be because of some old containers I should clear out…

Anyway, today I switched https://bradroot.me, https://staires.org, and https://ihavebeenfloated.org over to Cloudflare Pages. I didn’t want to have to set up GitHub repos for staires and IHBF, so I built Cloudflare Pages support into Postalgic (or, really, Claude Code did), which made it very easy to get the static sites uploaded so I could switch the DNS over.

I also found an article about how to properly redirect WWW to non-WWW domains on Cloudflare, which I referred to multiple times while doing this.

Feel free to use this topic to post stuff about your own homelab / self-hosting / hobby networking + internet stuff.

I’ve been paying $12/mo for years now to AWS Lightsail for my Wordpress instance at https://amiantos.net

Today I…

  1. Got Wordpress running on my home server in a container
  2. Migrated wp-content and the mysql database over to my containerized WP
  3. Installed Simply Static, a wordpress plugin that generates a static site from your WP site
  4. Set up a watcher script to detect changes in the static site and then uses wrangler to upload the site to Cloudflare Pages.

So now https://amiantos.net should be a static site that is served by Cloudflare Pages for free, instead of paying $12/mo for it. Very nice!

It was kind of a pain in the ass but worth it to save $144/year.

Updated ‘portal’ to all my homelab related stuffs

Reddit has permanently removed access to /r/all now, it redirects to the home page… how fucking annoying. Now there’s only the algorithmic /popular feed. Not the r/all was perfect or anything but you got more interesting stuff in there… well, not anymore, it’s gone.

Ah there’s even articles about it

What a bunch of bullshit

I guess I am on all subreddits until they shut it down.

Oh it’s been gone for a while! It’s been really fucking annoying, I used it r/all the time (ba dum tss).

Up till yesterday, it was only gone from the menu, you could still go to it directly via the URL

Oh that makes sense. I use the app like a loser lol.

I installed Textual last night so I could lurk on IRC and feel connected to people like in the 90’s. It kinda worked.

I think today I am going to set up https://thelounge.chat on my homelab.

Well, I don’t think I like this as much as an actual native app window.

that’s interesting, IRC is before my time hahah

Yeah I was 11-13 during my IRC heyday. DALnet was my server but it died out a few years ago due to mismanagement sadly

What kinda nasty shit did 13 year old Brad get up to in IRC servers :joy:
